Strategic Plan Announced

Bethesda Inc. Announces New Strategic Plan Focusing on Transformational, Community-wide Health Improvement Initiatives

Plan will support healthcare innovation, collaboration, education and research
Cincinnati, OH, October 7, 2010 -- Bethesda Inc., a major provider of health-related services in Greater Cincinnati for nearly 115 years, today said it has refocused its mission to support health care innovation, collaboration, education and research in Cincinnati, and to help the region become one of the most desirable places to receive and deliver health related services in the United States.

“Bethesda was founded to provide our community with the highest level of health care available at the time,” said James Pearce, chairman of the board. “Our new strategic plan builds on that legacy by continuing our sponsorship of major health services, while broadening our investments in new ways to improve delivery of healthcare services throughout the community.”

Bethesda Inc. has collaborated with Denver-based Catholic Health Initiatives for 15 years as joint sponsors of TriHealth, an integrated health delivery system that operates Bethesda North Hospital, Good Samaritan Hospital, Hospice of Cincinnati, and other physician, employer-based and ambulatory services. Good Samaritan Hospital of Cincinnati is an affiliate of Catholic Health Initiatives. Bethesda Inc. is the parent corporation of Bethesda North Hospital.

Through the partnership, Good Samaritan Hospital and Bethesda North Hospital offer a wide range of clinical, educational, preventive and social programs. In addition to the Bethesda North Hospital, Hospice of Cincinnati and related assets operated by TriHealth, Bethesda Inc. is the parent corporation of Bethesda Foundation Inc. and Bethesda Center for Reproductive Health and Fertility.

Strategic Plan to Help Identify Systemic Solutions

Under its strategic plan, Bethesda Inc. will become more involved in collaborating with or funding local projects that can provide long-term, systemic solutions that improve how care is provided. The outcomes would include reducing health care costs and enhancing the health of the community by enabling people to become more engaged in their own healthcare management.

Bethesda Inc.'s core strategies are to:

  • Seek out and help fund transformational improvement projects at Bethesda holdings.
  • Collaborate with and/or fund local, innovative, transformational community health improvement initiatives.
  • Ensure its continuing sponsorship role in TriHealth is effective.
  • Reduce its direct operation of other health care services.
  • Effectively manage its resources.

“Now is the time to come together to alter the course of local health care, providing innovative programs and services in our community that will make a long-term difference,” Pearce said. “At the same time, our hope is that this step will attract others to become more engaged in this work, organizationally and financially.”

In the near future, Bethesda Inc. expects to announce further steps in implementing its strategic plan, including awarding several community grants. It has previously announced the sale of its Consolidated Health Services business to Catholic Health Initiatives.

“Greater Cincinnati is home to some of the nation’s most progressive and respected health-based organizations and is a center of excellence for work ranging from bench research and manufacturing, to clinical research, teaching and health care delivery,” Pearce said. “If we’re successful, we’ll continue to attract the best and brightest and efficiently deliver world-class care, which will benefit everyone.”
